Struga/Vevcani

BLACK DRIM RIVER

Struga
*On its way to the Adriatic Sea the Drim forms two man made lakes, Globochitsa and Spilje.
*The Black Drim flows out of Lake Ohrid at Struga, and leaves the country near the town of Debar.

KALISTA MONASTERY

*Kalista monastery complex id placed on the coast of Ohrid Lake in a natural rocky environment
*The complex consists of four churches: two dedicated to the Nativity of Holy Mother of God (in a cave), a church dedicated to Sts. Peter and Paul, the apostols, and one dedicated to St. Athanasius the Great (in a cave)
*Three monk cells are placed within the rock in which the church is built – two on the first floor and one on the second.

VEVCANI

Struga
*Vevcani is located at the foot of mountain Jablanica
*The village issues red Vevcani passports and prints a currency – the lichnik, to be handed out out as souvenirs
*Vevcani people are known as skillful builders, which can be noted in the village architecture

VEVCANI SPRINGS

*The springs in Village vevcani are monument of nature and ecological zone with high degree of protection.
*The springs besides their hydrological also have spiritual value. On this location are held various religious and other ceremonies.

VEVCANI CARNIVAL

*It’s one of the most famous village festival held in the Balkans
*It’s believed that the custom is over 1400 years old
*It’s based on old Pagan beliefs and rituals
*The festivity id dedicated to Saint Basil the Great
*The participants of the festival are known as “Vasilicari”
*It’s recognized by the Federation of European Carnival Cities (FECC)
