BAY OF BONES


*Bay of bones is an authentic reconstruction of a part of the pile – dwelling settlement, dating back between 1200 and 700 B.C
*The name given (Bay of Bones) is a nod to many animal remains and fragmented vessels that have been found there
*In prehistoric times Lake Ohrid was a home to a settlement of pile – dwellers who lived literally on top of the water, on a platform supported by 10,000 wooden piles anchored to the lake bed

NATIONAL WORKSHOP FOR HANDMADE PAPER

*This museum / shop has one of only two copies of the Gutenberg Press in the world
*The national workshop for handmade paper is one of the seven workshops in the world where the paper is handmade in an original Chinese method from the 2 century B.C

CHINAR TREE

*It’s considered oldest tree in the country
*Legends say that St. Clement of Ohrid personally planted the tree
* Legends and stories say the Chinar tree is 11 centuries old, but expert say the tree is old about 6 centuries
*In the old days is considered that this is the place where executions were performed

CHURCH ST. SOPHIA

*The church is one of the most important monuments in Macedonia, hosting architecture and art form the Middle Ages.
*The interior of the church has been preserved with frescoes from the 11th, 12th and 13th century, which represents some of the most significant achievements in Byzantine painting of the time.

CHURCH ST. JOVAN KANEO

Ohrid

*The church Saint Jovan – Kaneo is the most famous church in Ohrid.
*It’s built in the XIII century in the honor of St. John the Theologian
*The fresco painters are unknown

ANCIENT THEATRE

Ohrid

*Built in 200 B.C and it is the only Hellenistic – type theatre in the country from Roman times
*Some of the former distinguished citizens have leased their own seats in the theatre, and their names still stand engraved in the stone blocks
*Most probably, the theatre was destroyed by the end of the 4th century or at the beginning of the 5th century A.D, when Christianity arrived in Ohrid.

SAMUEL’S FORTRESS

Ohrid

*Built in the III century B.C
*Was the capital of the first Bulgarian Empire during the rule of Tsar Samuel
*The town was entered by 3 gates, of which only Upper Gate has been preserved

ST. NAUM MONASTERY

Ohrid

*Built in the 900 year by St. Naum of Ohrid
*In the 910 St. Naum was buried there
*Macedonians believe you can still hear the saint’s heartbeat by pressing an ear to his stone coffin inside the church
*Some inscriptions in the church make up some of the oldest epigraphic evidence of Slavic literacy

CHURCH OF SAINTS CLEMENT AND PANTELEIMON

*It’s attributed to Saint Clement of Ohrid
*It is located on the site where the first students of the Glagolitic alphabet were taught
*Clement personally built a crypt inside the church in which he was buried after his death in 916
