Sofia is the capital and the largest city of Bulgaria, located in the bottom of Vitosha Mountain, in western part of the state. The city is located on the strategically good position in the centre of the Balkan Peninsula. The history of Sofia is 2,400 years long. Its ancient name, Serdica, derives from the Celtic tribe Serdi which founded the city in the 5th Century BC. It remained a relatively small settlement until the year 1879. when it was proclaimed the capital of Bulgaria. In terms of population, Sofia is the 15th city in the European Union with a population of approximately 1.3 million. Most of the main Bulgarian universities, cultural institutions and commercial developments are situated in Sofia.
